Introduction

Over more than 12,000 years, the people of Siwa have developed unique traditions, including techniques for building, styles of embroidery and systems of agricultural production, remarkable for their harmony with the natural environment.
But over the last half-century, Siwa has witnessed the introduction of several modern but inappropriate technologies that threaten to erode the oasis’s unique cultural and environmental treasures.
To help protect one of the world’s last remaining pristine oases from these growing threats, Environmental Quality International launched the Sustainable Development Initiative with the aim of preserving Siwa’s cultural and environmental integrity while creating new opportunities for sustainable investment.
